Creating Multi-Step Forms in WordPress (Step-by-step)

Follow these step-by-step instructions to create a beautiful, multi-step form on your WordPress website.

1. Download WPForms

Sign into your WPForms account and head to downloads area.

download WPForms

It will show your license type, key, and renewal date on the screen. Click the download button to download your plugin files. Upload it to your website as a new plugin.

After activation, you will see a new top-level menu on the left pane of your WordPress dashboard - WPForms. Expand the menu to create and manage forms, install add-ons, configure settings and more.

2. Create a new WordPress form

Visit WPForms > Add new to design and publish a WordPress form. Choose any of the built-in templates to create your form. For this tutorial, we'll create a job application form.

Job application form

Scroll-down through additional templates to locate the job application form. On mouse over, it will show a create button. Click it to view and edit your form.

It is a long form. So you can divide it in to pieces.

3. Split your form into multiple pieces

A job application form will have multiple sections such as personal information, educational qualitification details, work experience, etc. Divide those things in to different parts to allow candidates to fill up your form page-wise.

How it works?

Find 'Page Break' field from fancy fields, drag and drop it in-between sections to generate the next page.

Thus you can split a WordPress form in to any number of pieces. Drag the 'Page Break' field from the left side and place it in the form area where you want to split the form.

4. Add a Progress bar

It is a good idea to add a progress bar to the form so that users can easily understand how much of the form has been completed and how much is left. WPForms allows you to add progress indicators in three styles- progress bar, circles, and connector.

On the top of your multi-step page, you will see the 'First Page/ Progress Indicator' break. Click it to view settings.

Choose your indicator type from the left side. Customize its color if needed. Enter a title for your page. Repeat these steps for all other pages also.

Don't forget to save your changes.

5. Configure settings and notifications

Click the Settings tab from the left pane to manage settings (Form name, button text, CAPTCHA, etc), email notifications, and confirmations.

Once you configured those things, you can publish the multi-step form.

WPForms lets you insert forms in three ways,

  • Form embed code (Click the embed code button from the top of your form editor)
  • Shortcode (WPForms > All forms > Form name)
  • WordPress visual page editor (Posts/Pages > Add new > Add form> choose your form from the drop-down list)

Insert your multi-step form in posts or pages to collect applications from candidates (in this case).

That's it.
